Sandra Luna * Biography

“Luna might just prove to be the figure to propel tango into the new century, and to bring it, reenergized and soulful, into the mainstream of world music.” – as Chris Nickson said: “That she's a star is beyond doubt, and in her hands the music sparkles”
Grammy Awards nominee in “The Best Traditional World Music” category, Sandra Luna was born in Buenos Aires where she grew up performing and sharing the stage with the greatest interpreters of traditional and new tango. Already established as one of the most important voices of the genre, Sandra Luna is single handedly rewriting the aesthetics of voice interpretation in 21st century tango.
The Buenos Aires born songstress has been breathing new life into the music of her homeland ever since she began performing professionally at the age of 7. During her subsequent teenage years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, she grad¬uated to singing in the most famous venues such as “Casa de Carlos Gardel”, “El Rincón de los Artistas”, Caño 14 ('the cathedral of tango'), “and El Viejo Almacén”, places she frequented along with the most prestigious tango orchestras of the time and old-school stars such as Enrique Mario Franci¬ni, Antono Agri, El Sexteto Mayor, Leopoldo Federico, Edmundo Rivero, Roberto Goyeneche, Rubén Juarez and Virginia Luque. Luna is deeply rooted in the past honoring such tango legends as Carlos Gardel ,as well as Astor Piazzolla the founder of “Nuevo Tango” and many other tango composers.

Sandra had already been touring as far afield as Japan since 1985. During her years in Spain she was based in Murcia, Alicante and Valencia and toured Europe, Asia and the USA.
But by 1998 she was so homesick for Buenos Aires that she returned, with an invitation from SADAIC (The Argentine Society Of Writers & Composers Of Music) to perform at an international festival that same year. She won the prize for 'Best Interpreter', and in the years that followed made tours of Japan, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Netherlands.
In 2001 Sandra Luna recorded "Tangos del Alma" and soon started to work on the production of her second CD, “Tango Varón”, with Serge Glanzberg who has worked with Manu Dibango, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and the Clash's Mick Jones. When he was asked to produce Sandra Luna, he connected for the first time with his father's old love: tango. Norbert Glanzberg was a star pianist in the late 1940s, touring with Edith Piaf, Yves Montand and Charles Trenet.

Sandra Luna toured Holland and Belgium performing at theatres such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Södra Theatre in Stockholm. In 2005 she received the Foundation Konex diploma of merit as "Tango Female Singer of the Decade".

Alas de Eladia varias tapas

In May 2006, in co-production with Eladia Blázquez, Ms. Luna recorded "Con las Alas de Eladia" , an album that was distributed in Argentina and the United States.

In March 2007 she was invited by the Connecticut Grand Opera & Orchestra conducted by maestro Laurence Gilgore, to appear as guest singer at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut USA featuring songs from the album "Con las Alas de Eladia" that she had just finished recording.

Ms. Luna has also developed her career as a music producer, and in recent years has developed her own "Method of Breathing and Movement", and given master classes and workshops for singers, musicians and media professionals.
In 2010 Sandra Luna was presented with Pablo Ziegler on the First Edition of "Zero Hour Tango Fest" in Indianapolis, USA.
In July 2011 together with Pablo Ziegler Quartet at the legendary jazz club in New York "Birdland"
In 2013 at Sesi Jazz Fetival in Río de Janeiro with Yamandú Costa.

"Tango is a feeling that is so clear and pure… If you haven't met it, it will wait for you. But, after you meet it, you'll need it" -she said.
Press quotes:
“She's a surprisingly physical performer, pirouetting in high heels, tossing her long hair dramatically and wringing the maximum gravitas from every word... she grins, instantly winning over the audience with her valiant way of communication. It’s clear that she's no stranger to audiences outside Argentina, and her slightly confrontational performance style reflects many years of experience.” John Lusk, fRoots-UK
“Sie vermischt in ihrem Vokalstil große Frauenfiguren des Tangos, wie Mercedes Simone und Nelly Omar. Darüber hinaus lässt sie sich auch von Edith Piaf und Ella Fitzgerald beeinflussen, formt aber einen ganz eigenen Stil” Anita Rahm, Melodiva, Germany.
